LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas)
Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) is natural gas that has been cooled to a liquid state, to about -160º Celsius, for transportation and storage. The volume of natural gas in its liquid state is about 600 times smaller than its volume in its gaseous state.
This process allows natural gas to be transported to places where gas pipelines cannot reach.
Natural gas can be transported in special tankers to terminals around the world. At these terminals, LNG is returned to its gaseous state and transported via pipeline to distributors, industrial/commercial consumers and power plants.
Advantages of Natural Gas
Natural gas is the cleanest fossil fuel in existence and its use contributes to improving air quality in cities.
It is important to encourage the incorporation of natural gas vehicles (such as: buses, taxis and also in commercial fleets, etc.)
The use of natural gas to replace other fossil fuels implies a significant reduction in emissions levels, generating a direct benefit for the community by improving the air quality of cities and the environments of the industries that use it.
Natural gas is the most environmentally friendly fossil fuel because it burns cleaner
Other fossil fuels have many more harmful combustion products than natural gas. If we burn natural gas under perfect combustion circumstances, its light will be blue and there will be minimal to no harmful compounds.
1. Natural gas is abundant and an important source of energy
Natural gas is used as an energy source for generating heat and electricity, as well as serving as a raw material for industry.
2. Infrastructure already installed
The technology used to produce natural gas already exists and familiarity with current technology facilitates its use. It is increasingly used to generate energy and heat.
3. Natural gas can be easily transported
Natural gas is one of the best sources of energy to store and transport. It can be transported through international gas pipelines or in tankers (in the form of LNG). It is safer and easier to store than other fossil fuels.
4. Natural gas produces less pollution
Because its byproducts are in gaseous form, natural gas burns cleaner than gasoline or diesel, therefore, has a lower overall impact on the environment.
Additionally, since natural gas alleviates any need for an underground storage tank, it eliminates potential soil contamination, oil spills and unforeseen environmental cleanup.
